These unique specimens are from the Frodingham Ironstone in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.
The iron deposits in Lincolnshire were worked before the 19th Century. Forges at Stowe are mentioned in the Domesday Book. Archaeological evidence has been found of iron working at Scunthorpe as early as Roman Times.
The Frodingham Ironstone is shown from the ammonite evidence to range from the top of the semicostatum Zone to the top of the obtusum of the Lower Lias. Most of these Ammonites and cardinia Bi-values were found at Scunthorpe in the 1980s.
In 1988, the last Frodingham ironstone was extracted for steelmaking, possibly Britain’s last Jurassic ironstone when ironstone was crushed for roadstone. These fossils have been stored and prepped over time. Many hours go into their preparation and when completed are often a work of art. There is nothing quite like them.
You can obtain a piece of British Natural history, as well as a work of art. Remember there are only so many left.
